Case Study: Automated Timber Floor Design Software DAISY.ai

Client: Staircraft Group, one of the biggest timber stair and floor manufacturers in Europe.
The Challenge

After expanding their offer to include timber floor production, the client realized how inefficient the process of producing a structural floor design is and difficulties hiring good designers. It can take a designer 3+ hours to produce a structural design of a single timber floor. The technical director at Staircraft decided to commission AI experts at Brainpool to automate the process of designing timber I-joist floors using Artificial intelligence.

The Solution

Cutting edge AI technology has been used by a team of PhD-level researchers from Brainpool Ltd to create a fully functioning automated AI software tool which designs and produces framing layouts for I-joist floors without the need for design technicians. The technology is based on the principles of genetic programming, applying the latest research in this area. Based on priorities set by the user, the tool can produce framing layouts aim to either minimize material costs, maximize factory production speed or are the simplest to install on the job site. It presents manufacturers with the opportunity to reduce design bottlenecks, lead-times and overheads, as well as empowering building designers to see directly, at the concept stage, what the implications of their design decisions might be on both structural feasibility and likely component costs.

Results

• Design Time Reduced by 80%

• Double manufacturers’ productivity

• 10% reduction in construction cost of each floor (est. $700 per floor)
